KAVAKNOT Vegan Tefillin
Each tefillin set is crafted by hand with kavanah from 100% sustainable, vegan, and cruelty-free materials.
Tefillin Retzuos (Straps):
Made with certified sustainable, 100% plant-based vegan leather derived from upcycled grape skins from Italian vinyards.
Third-party tested free of any pesticides, carcinogenic and allergenic compounds, formaldehyde, phthalates and chlorophenols.
Straps are tied with traditional dalet and yud knotting.
Tefillin Batim (Boxes):
Shema and other traditional Torah parsha are housed within.
Tefillin boxes are crafted from ornate wood by hand and stained with traditional, wild-harvested oak gall ink (ink used for Sefer Torah).
Traditional 4-armed shin and 3-armed shin adorns the Tefillin shel rosh.
Vegan Klaf (parchment) Options:
The Shema and three other traditional Torah parsha are housed within each batim. Tefillin shel rosh contains each parsha on a separate klaf in a separate inner compartment. Tefillin shel yad contains all four parsha on a single rolled parchment.
Renewable Printed Klaf:
The Shema and other traditional Torah parsha are printed on hand-beaten sustainable paper klaf harvested from renewable Lokta bush (harvested above the root to allow regeneration each year).
Sefer Klaf, made with traditionally crafted, wild-harvested oak gall ink and handwritten with reed pen by our resident Sofer. Always triple checked for accuracy. (+$250)

Reviving and combining several rituals from the Jewish archaic that have fallen out of practice, KAVAKNOT tefillin straps are buried in wilderness for three days while the Tefillin craftsperson undergoes a three-day fast. They are then unearthed amidst recitation of Bereshit and Tefilah and symbolically passed hand to hand, dor le dor, to children of the next generation. Fruit, songs and dance celebrate the mitzvah of tefillin before they are tied to batim and sent to their next home.
While vegan Klaf is placed within Batim, each Tefillin box is blessed with the recipient’s specific intentions, Hebrew name, the 72 holy names and tefilot.
